Trains Cementery

The Train Cemetery (Cementerio de Trenes) is 3 km. to the south of the city of Uyuni. You can get to it by foot or bike. This is the first stop made in most of the tours visiting the Salar. The train cemetery consists of dozens of wagons and steam locomotives that operated in the early twentieth century, at the time that it was extremely important for the mining and railway activity in Uyuni.

Colchani, the "Door to the Salar"

Colchani village is a few miles from Uyuni and it has a cooperative for salt mining. The village has a small museum and a market selling souvenirs, most made with salt. A visit to the village of Colchani is a good idea to start having a perspective of the salar, especially to meet people who earn their living working in the White Desert. Colchani can be reached by truck, taxi, bicycle, or by foot (after a long walk).
