Rurrenabaque is a small town in northern Bolivia. It's also the capital of the Beni Department and the entrance to the fascinating jungle world. This tropical city lies on the banks of the Beni River.

"Rurre", as people normally call it, has a tropical weather and it lies on the banks of the Beni River. It is the gateway to the world of the jungle.

Rurrenabaque is the starting point for many tours providing an insight into the flora and fauna of the area. The city has many hostels and travel agencies and it's very pleasant for visitors.

How to get to Rurrenabaque

The best way to arrive to Rurrenabaque is by plane. You will often find promotional flights from La Paz.
Rurre can also be reached by bus from La Paz, although during the rainy season the road may be cut. From La Paz the bus trip lasts 18-20 hours.
Buses to Rurrenabaque also depart from Trinidad, Riberalta and Guayaramerin, and the trips are subject to the state of the route.

In Rurrenabaque you will need to take an organized tour to access more distant sites, allowing you to see the amazing spectacle of nature. In the city there are several travel agencies, but they all generally offer similar tours. Tours last three days or longer and include a guide, transportation, lodging and food. It is recommended to bring extra supplies of water.

But on this ride you won't find many animals as the ecosystem is dense in vegetation and of difficult access. The tour departs from Rurrenabaque and navigates the rivers Beni and Tuichi to reach the famous Madidi National Park (one of the most biodiverse places in the world).

Tour to the Pampas of Yacuma

The tour to the Pampas of Yacuma lacks the lush jungle of Madidi, but it's highly recommended for those looking for wild animals. The Pampas are located on the ecosystem of Yacuma River, a few kilometers from the town of Santa Rosa del Yacuma and three hours from Rurrenabaque. On the walk you will see alligators, turtles, capybaras, monkeys, deer, tapirs, ostriches, snakes and a large variety of birds and butterflies. Navigating the river you will also see the pink (Amazonian) dolphins and experience piranhas fishing.
